Compilation shows ("songs from the shows") - A Cautionary Note
Sometimes groups stage evenings of "songs from the shows", frequently as fund-raisers.

Whilst this may be a good idea, there is one note of caution:
In order to stage a song from a show in the way in which it is stage in the original show
(either in terms of costume, choreography, set or action), then you need permission from
the rights holders for that show.

Generally, rights holders will not give permission to stage "part of a show".
They want to protect their property by offering the whole show or nothing!

If you don't mimic the original staging in any way (which means you just sing the song),
then rights are normally obtained through a collection agency -
the Performing Right Society (PRS) or the local equivalent.

However, some rights holders (including Lazy Bee Scripts) do not operate through the PRS.
In that case, if you want to use a song from a show, you need to contact the rights holder.
