Lazy Bee Scripts - Licensing...

Rights to Record Music
If you want to make recordings of music to use in preparation for a show or during a show,
then you need the permission of the rights holder for that music.

If the music is not composed specifically for the show (for example, pop songs),
then the rights holder should be approached via a collection agency.  In the UK, this would be
the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) who will give permission to make recordings.
(They will charge a licence fee!)

If the music is composed specifically for a show,
then you should make a direct approach to the rights holder for that show
(the rights holder for the script).  They may charge a fee!  (They may also refuse permission.)

Specific Lazy Be Scripts issues:-
  • Where Lazy Bee Scripts is the rights holder for music
(and we supply sheet music with the script for a show)
then we automatically give permission to make recordings for the preparation and production
of the show (but the recordings may not be used for any other purpose!)
  • Where Lazy Bee Scripts supplies recorded music then
either we are acting directly on behalf of the rights holder and have the right to record or
we (or our supplier) has paid for an MCPS licence to create the recording

Note that the right to make a recording is a different right from the right to play that recording
in a public place!  (See Performance Royalties for Music.)
