Production Notes

This page explains what we want you to put at the end of your script.
(Other publishers may want other things.)

What are Production Notes, and what are they for?
  • The purpose of production notes is to make life easier for the production team by providing useful information to go with a script.  (For example, it will save them from parsing every line to look for essential props)
  • All of the production notes are optional - and some make more sense in some circumstances than in others (for example, there's no point in providing a lighting plot or a stage diagram for a simple sketch.  In our view, the most essential item is the Props list.  Other options include (but are not limited to)...

Character descriptions
Lighting plot
Sound effects plot
Song / music suggestions
Costume suggestions
Set descriptions
Set diagrams

Props List
  • The Properties list should include every item called for by the script
  • This includes portable items set on the stage, items set off-stage and carried on, and "personal props" (such as handkerchiefs)
  • It excludes major items of furniture which are part of the set.  (Obviously there is a grey area between set and props.  Make your own mind up where the boundary is for your script!)
  • The props list should be set out scene-by-scene and indicate (in brackets after the prop) whether it is set on stage, set offstage, or belongs to a named character...

Example:-
Scene 1
     Grecian Urn (set on stage)
     Scroll (set inside the urn)
     Wheelbarrow (set offstage)
     Sword (Alexander)
     Bow (Philip)
     Quiver of arrows (Philip)

Lighting Plot & Sound Plot
  • These are usually separate items (because usually different people operate the controls)
  • All cross-references should be by scene and by a text cue.  (Never cross reference to a page.  The script will be repaginated multiple times during the editing process and cross references to pages will not survive.)

Song and Music Suggestions
  • If your script includes suggestions for songs (other than songs written specifically for the show), then the body of the script should contain song numbers, but not titles
  • The production notes should have a list giving the title of each numbered song
  • The production notes should state the source of each song - ideally the composer and lyricist, but failing that, then the name of the recording artist.  (This is because sometimes a title is used multiple times for different songs, and also because the production team may not know the song and may need clues to track it down.)
