Kids in Tights - The Play by Bill Siviter
Performance by Ormlie Community Group won the SCDA, Caithness district, 2010 (also picking up the trophy for best ensemble).
RolesMinimum Male roles = 5. Minimum Female roles = 3. Minimum total with doubling = 10. Minimum total without doubling = 11. No chorus. A chorus could be added as an optional extra for the ball scene and for the gangs of Montagues and Capulets.
Run TimeAround 20 minutes. [Estimated!] The ball and fight scenes can be extended.
MusicNone.
StyleRomeo and Juliet told as an irreverent verse play, told by the protagonists and by narrators. A good introduction to Shakespeare's story! (The specified run-time is the minimum - extending the ball and the fight will add time!)
SynopsisShakespeare's Romeo and Juliet condensed into a twenty-minute verse play for kids. Boy meets girl, love overcomes the family feud - but only for the lovers. Swordplay turns rivals into kebabs. Mistakes are made and the heroes die. (You see, it's a soppy love story.)

In Arthur's absence Mordred decides that he wants the job on a permanent basis and that includes taking Queen Guinevere as well. Now, as we all know, damsels in distress inevitably attract heroic rescuers. Cue would-be knight Sir Lancelot. What Lancelot lacks in knightly skills he makes up for in enthusiasm. Unfortunately he cannot overcome Mordred and even the returning Arthur needs to turn to the mystic legends of Avalon in order to reclaim Camelot and his Guinevere.

StyleHistorical (in the acurate as a Hollywood epic sense of the word) comedy drama for kids, set during the English Civil War.
SynopsisKing Charles And The Cheese is the entirely (give or take most of it) true story of how a simple piece of cheese altered the course of English history. The English Civil War rages on but, after a heavy defeat at the Battle of Worcester, the would-be King Charles II attempts to make his way to, hopefully temporary, exile in France. In hot pursuit are Charles' enemy Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of All England and his Roundhead army Charles takes cover at the Royal Oak Inn but Cromwell and his men are upon him in short order. Is Charles doomed or can salvation be found in the Royal Oak's larder?

King Henry VIII by Geoff Bamber
Performance by Mini Roundabout Theatre Company - Overall winners of the Leverhulme Youth Drama Festival, 2006
RolesMinimum Male roles = 8. Minimum Female roles = 6. Minimum total with doubling = 15. Minimum total without doubling = 27. No chorus.
Run TimeAround 40 minutes. [Estimated!]
MusicNone.
StyleHumorous history, peppered with anachronisms. Single simple set, simple props. (Technically 3 Acts, but short enough for a one-act play!) Fits with the English National Curriculum Key Stage 2 History syllabus (at a stretch!)
SynopsisHenry VIII accidentally succeeds his father to the throne, after the premature death of his elder brother. His divorce from his first wife brings him a run-in with the pope, which doesn't stop him repeating his mistakes, including the disastrous acquisition of a wife via e-Bay (Ann of Cleeves, apparently), in his quest to furnish an heir to the throne.

King Lear by Geoff Bamber
RolesMinimum Male roles = 9. Minimum Female roles = 3. Minimum total with doubling = 14. Minimum total without doubling = 14. No chorus. The number of roles can be increased by adding soldiers (the King of France in particular would make good use of them.)
Run TimeAround 55 minutes. [Estimated!]
MusicNone.
StyleShort modern-English version of Shakespeare's tragedy. (Whilst the plot is all there, there are more comic moments than the bard envisaged.) The author has structured this in 13 acts, but don't let that fool you.
SynopsisAn ageing King Lear intends to retire and hand over his throne to one of his squabbling daughters. The Earl of Gloucester, on the other hand, does not intend to retire but his scheming son, Edmund, wants to take over the title anyway, even if it means by-passing the rightful heir, his brother Edgar. The two families' affairs become linked and a violent tale of treachery, jealousy and blind ambition ensues.
Despite the body count running into double figures, this is a comedy.

The King of Spain's Treasure by Geoff Bamber
Performance by Cheshire Academy of Performing arts won the Syd Mence Trophy at the Wilmslow Guild One Act Play Festival may 2011 (for being 'a piece of magic'!)
RolesMinimum Male roles = 10. Minimum Female roles = 3. Minimum total with doubling = 14. Minimum total without doubling = 14. Chorus.
Run TimeAround 30 minutes. [Estimated!]
MusicNone.
StyleLoosely based on Treasure Island - so loosely that Robert Louis Stevenson is probably spinning in his grave. Jokes and puns and a new take on an old story. Not strictly a pantomime, but might be played as one.
SynopsisJim Hawkins, now in possession of the tattered map of a distant tropical island, sees a life of adventure and great riches beckoning but, as the story unfolds, he realises that he is not the only one with an interest in the treasure.

L.A. Gendry And The Tomb Of Kalos by Geoff Bamber
RolesMinimum Male roles = 2. Minimum Female roles = 4. Minimum total with doubling = 10. Minimum total without doubling = 18. No chorus. As written, there are four archaeologists and six villagers, but these numbers are flexible in either direction.
Run TimeAround 30 minutes. [Estimated!]
MusicNone.
StyleOne-act comedy adventure for kids. In theory, there are three locations, but these can be indicated by a minimum of furniture (or lack of furniture).
SynopsisL.A. Gendry, all-action female adventurer, is enlisted to help Professor Polonius and his daughter excavate the recently discovered tomb of the little-known Egyptian King Kalos. The tomb's treasure is to be the centrepiece of a museum for the benefit of all. At least that is the Professor's plan. However the tomb is said to be cursed and criminal mastermind The Scar (incidentally L.A. Gendry's arch enemy) has other ideas.

The Lambton Worm by Timothy Hallett and Nicholas Richards
RolesMinimum Male roles = 3. Minimum Female roles = 1. Minimum total with doubling = 5. Minimum total without doubling = 19. Chorus. Very flexible casting. There is one narrator role, but this could be shared out. Equally, the chorus could be 'all the actors'.
Run TimeAround 20 minutes. [Estimated!]
MusicA 40-page musical score is included with the Producer's Copy of the script.
StyleShort musical retelling of an English folk tale. (The music plays throughout, even though some of the narration is spoken rather than sung.) No real set requirements, but the ideal performance would put some effort into creating a fearsome worm!
SynopsisThe tale of the wild worm of Wearside and its grisly end.
It should be emphasised that 'worm' is used in its old sense of 'serpent' - so this is a story of knights fighting dragons.
