It worked out really well. I did it for a kids summer camp. I had 7 girls and 1 boy. We worked on it for two weeks and concluded the camp with a performance. I did change some of the genders to make it work out and most of the students had two parts. The costumes were really simple, so they could change easily to another character. Everyone wore black pants and shoes. Most of the characters wore black shirts and Harriet and Gertie wore white shirts. They added horns, wings, beaks, and/or ears to change character. The staging was simple and open with only the necessary props. I did lighting effects on the cyc to add atmosphere and mood. The students really enjoyed the fables and the parents liked the show.
