A Murder Mystery Event

What's it all about?
  • A murder mystery event in which the actors mingle and interact with the audience / guests
  • Lazy Bee Scripts provides the scenario
  • The actors improvise the dialogue based on the scenario

What's does Lazy Bee Scripts provide?
Lazy Bee Scripts supplies a pack of material for the performing company including:-
  • A "narrative arc" for the murder, covering
    • Essential events
    • Essential plot points
    • The resolution!
  • A background brief for each character
    • Character description
    • Character history
    • Motivation
  • General staging guidelines
    • Recommendations for preparation
    • Guidelines for improvisation (and how to deal with awkward members of the audience!)
    • Preparing the venue for the event (making sure that the staff don't throw the actors out for bad behaviour!)
  • Audience "Detective Sheets"
    • So the audience can guess who-dunnit (and, possibly, win a prize)
  • Collateral material to make the "event" more realistic
    • Allows you to print event cards and an incriminating letter for distribution at the event

Note that Lazy Bee Scripts does not provide a script for the dialogue. Because the actors are interacting with the audience, it is not possible to stick to a fixed script, instead the actors improvise dialogue based on the "narrative arc."

What's a Murder Mystery Event?

  • The scenario is run as if the audience has been brought together for a special occasion
  • In this case
    • The event is a dinner at a "weekend retreat", hosted by Sir Clive and Lady Clarissa Worthington-Jones
    • The event is set in 1926 (the cast should certainly be dressed in period costume, and the audience may be invited to do the same!)
    • The "audience" has the role of the people invited to the retreat - society worthies and acquaintances of the family
    • As the actors progress with the toasts and speeches, the plot mystery develops until one of the characters is found murdered...

What's in this Scenario?
The year is 1926. The place is the country estate of Sir Clive and Lady Clarissa, home to the Worthington-Jones family since the Seventeenth Century. The event is the evening meal to mark the start of a weekend retreat at the estate. The audience are all invited family friends and members of the aristocratic social circle in which Sir Clive and Lady Clarissa move.

In addition to the aristocratic hosts, other notable guests at the soiree include:
Dora Worthington-Jones: Their 21 year old daughter.
Hugo Bottomley MP: A Tory politician and close 'friend' of Dora.
Sandy Greatham: A long standing 'houseguest' and social secretary to Sir Clive.
Madge Thistlethwaite: A close confidant to the family.
Myra Barker-Mowles: A popular socialite.

The dinner should be a pleasant and engaging occasion but family skeletons are revealed and some very dubious business arrangements come to light which eventually lead to
two murders.
