Lazy Bee Scripts Full Commercial Terms and Conditions
This page covers the terms and conditions that apply to all orders (except embroidered clothing, which has a separate page).

If you can't find the information you are looking for here, then please look under the "Get Help" tab of the main menu.

The subset of these conditions which apply to your order will be sent to you in the e-mail confirming receipt of your order.

Full List of Terms and Conditions
1. What we provide
Licence to perform a script, in whole or in part
Writers of plays get most of their income from performance royalties. Each time a script is performed, the author is entitled to a royalty fee.
These terms cover only performances and readings on a stage (or equivalent) to an audience. Separate terms cover video and radio rights. The right to stage a show does not convey the right to distribute audio or video recordings, broadcasts or streams.

2. Availability
Performance licences are only available to individuals and groups who have previously purchased master copies or performance sets of scripts from Lazy Bee Scripts.

3. Type of performance
Different types of performance incur royalties at different rates. We may distinguish between different types of organisations and between 'performances made to paying audiences', 'performances to non-paying audiences' and 'Classroom /workshop performances' (where there is no audience other than fellow class-members, tutors and, where appropriate, examiners).
A 'paying audience' includes all means of payment, including ticket, donation, membership of organisation and payment for an event of which the entertainment forms a part (for example, a dinner and cabaret, where a script is used for part of the cabaret).
Of course, some performance will be at the borderline between our categories. If you are in doubt, then please consult us (see the Contacts page for details). If you believe that your performance should be charged at a different rate, then don't go to the checkout. Instead, send us an e-mail (see our Contact page) with a brief explanation of why you should be treated as a special case, and we will tell you what to enter in the on-line forms.

4. What counts as a performance?
Any performance in front of an audience requires the permission of the rights holder, for which the rights holder is entitled to set a performance royalty.
Rehearsals do not count as performances but...
If you allow an audience (other than people directly involved in the show as actors or production crew) to see a rehearsal, this counts as a performance and is liable for performance royalties. (Some groups do this, with a reduced entry charge, to give the performers an idea of how the audience will react.)
A play reading in which members of a group read to each other does not count as a performance, but a play reading before an audience does.

5. Venue Capacity
For amateur performances, royalties are charged according to the audience capacity of the venue (usually the number of seats), not the actual number of people who see the show. (If you only manage to sell half the seats in your theatre, that is your problem, not ours!)
If you do a tour with multiple venues of different sizes, then the royalties will reflect the capacity of each venue.

6. Changes in Performance Requirements
It is recognised that performance requirements may change during the planning of a production.
Additional performances can be added at any time by visiting the Lazy Bee Scripts pricing page and purchasing additional performance licences. (Note that in this process you may be asked to provide the Order Number given to you when you originally purchased the script.)
Reduction in the number of performances, including cancellation of the show, qualify for refunds (see below).
If a change of venue changes the audience capacity, then the performance royalty will change and you will be liable for additional charges or eligible for a refund. You must contact Lazy Bee Scripts as soon as such a change is confirmed to agree the changes to the performance fee. (See our Contact page for contact details.)
It is the customer's responsibility to notify us if performance dates are changed. Changed performance dates not notified to us will be assumed to be additional performances, and the customer will be charged accordingly.

7. Credit Shall be Given to the Authors and Copyright Shall Be Respected
The name(s) of the author(s) must be displayed on all forms of advertising and promotional material, including, but not limited to posters, programmes, hand bills and web sites.
For material publicising public performances, the publisher and rights agent shall be credited in promotional material, using the words 'By arrangement with Lazy Bee Scripts'.
The authors of British pantomimes (and some other scripts) allow 'localisations' (usually topical references and changing place names to refer to local places) to be made without needing separate permission.
Other than the above exception, the text of the work shall be performed in full with no changes (to title, characters, plot or speech) unless permission for changes has been obtained from Lazy Bee Scripts.

8. Videos of Amateur Shows
Performance license for an amateur production includes permission to make one and only one video of the show.
This excludes the right to broadcast the show (live or from a video recording) or to distribute recordings or live performances via the internet. Please contact Lazy Bee Scripts before doing such things.
Additional videos, including copies of the original video, require an additional video licence which may be purchased from Lazy Bee Scripts. (See the separate Video terms and conditions.)
Members of the audience have no right to make videos of a performance. Such videos constitute an actionable breach of copyright. Enforcement of this prohibition is the responsibility of the production company.
Videos made to promote a production may quote from the script provided that the sum of all quotations made in all videos does not exceed 10% of the script. Each video must include a credit to the author(s) of the script.

9. Refunds
Any performances cancelled and notified to Lazy Bee Scripts five days or more before the planned first show qualify for full refunds of the performance licence fee for the cancelled performances. If you wish to request a refund, please contact us before taking any other action. (For example, it is easier and cheaper for us to process a refund than if you cancel a transaction with your credit card company.) See our Contact page for contact details. Please quote your order number in any correspondence.
Performances cancelled within five days of the first performance are not eligible for refunds.
Shows that fail to attract an audience are not eligible for refunds. If you get an audience of two in a hall with a capacity of three hundred, that is your problem, not ours.

3. Royalty Fees for Professional Performance
Unless agreed otherwise, professional performances are charged a royalty fee of 7% of total income from ticket sales (or equivalent) plus (where applicable) VAT.
Where the performing company performs to non-paying audiences (e.g. theatre-in-education), the royalty fee is 7% of total income associated with the production (including, but not limited to, fees, grants, bursaries and donations).
The Customer shall declare gross box office earnings (or equivalent) to Lazy Bee Scripts within 7 days of the last performance or within 7 days of the end of each month for a show with a run of more than one month

A play reading in which members of a group read to each other does not count as a performance, but a play reading before an audience does.

5. Changes in Performance Requirements

It is the customer's responsibility to notify us if performance dates are changed.

Other than the above exception, the text of the work shall be performed in full with no changes (to title, names, characters, plot or speech) unless permission for changes has been obtained from Lazy Bee Scripts.

7. Videos of Professional Productions
With the exception of publicity videos (see below), videos of professional productions and videos for other purposes are not covered by these terms. Please contact Lazy Bee Scripts before making a video of a script for any other purpose.
A video made to promote a production may quote from the script provided that the sum of all quotations made in all videos does not exceed 10% of the script. The video must include a credit to the author(s) of the script.
Members of the audience have no right to make videos of a performance. Such videos constitute an actionable breach of copyright. Enforcement of this prohibition is the responsibility of the production company.

8. Refunds
Since there is no up-front performance rights fee, the need for refunds should never arise.

1. What we provide
We provide master copies of the scripts (made available for download from the Lazy Bee Scripts web site) in two formats:
The Cast Copy provided as a PDF file, formatted as interleaved pages, designed to be printed, then copied double-sided and folded to form a booklet (which is easier to handle in rehearsals than full pages of A4 or Letter size)
The Producer's Copy, which is provided in a Word document in A4 or Letter size (according to your choice from the ordering system). This contains the script plus additional production notes (which vary from script to script).
If we supply a music score with the script then it is available as a .pdf file. (Most browsers can display and print .pdf files, if yours can't, then a reader is available as a free download from the Adobe web site, www.adobe.com - search for free PDF reader.)

2. Use of the Script
Master copies are provided for the purposes of preparing for a production (or for the use of a script in a Classroom, where the only people present are tutors and members of the class). Possession of master copies does not convey any rights to performance of the script before an audience, in whole or in part.
(Performance licences may be obtained from Lazy Bee Scripts according to the scale of fees set out on the Lazy Bee Scripts web site.)

3. If you purchase Master Copies, you may:-
Print as many copies as you need for the purposes of your organisation (theatre group, school, etc.) except where excluded by other clauses in these terms.
Make minor changes - see below - to the script to suit the needs of your group. (If you want to make major changes, then you need to ask us first.)
The authors of British pantomimes (and some other scripts) allow 'localisations' (usually topical references and changing place names to refer to local places) to be made without needing separate permission. These are classed as minor changes.

4. If you purchase Master Copies, then you may not:-
Sell or otherwise transfer the master copies, individual scripts or sets of scripts to any party outside your organisation in printed or electronic form. (Master copies are supplied for your organisation alone.)
Represent the work contained in the master scripts as your own. (All the work is copyrighted by the authors. Breach of copyright is actionable in a court of law.)
Make changes to the text of the work (other than the exception noted in 3) unless you have obtained permission from Lazy Bee Scripts. Changes that require permission include changes to title, names, characters, plot and speech.

5. Returns and Refunds
If you buy a script by mistake, or if we make the wrong script available for download, you have the right to refund and/or replacement provided that you notify Lazy Bee Scripts within 7 days of your order being accepted by us. If you wish to request a refund or replacement, please contact us before taking any other action. (For example, it is easier and cheaper for us to process a refund than if you cancel a transaction with your credit card company.) See our Contact page for contact details. Please quote your order number in any correspondence.
Since Master Copies are generally provided as electronic copies, the concept of a return is meaningless.

1. What we provide
Cast Copies of the script in booklet format. The number of cast copies is selectable by the customer, but the starting point is one script for each listed character plus a few additional copies if there is a 'chorus'.
One 'Producer's Copy' of the script. This is a loose-leaf document of A4 size, containing the script plus additional production notes (which vary from script to script). If we supply sheet music with a script, then this is supplied with the producer's copy.
The scripts are sent to you by post. (First Class post in the UK, airmail elsewhere.)

2. Use of the Script
Complete Sets of Scripts for Performance are provided for the purposes of preparing for a production (or for the use of a script in a Classroom). Possession of a Complete Sets of Scripts for Performance does not convey any rights to the public performance of the script, in whole or in part.
(Performance licences may be obtained from Lazy Bee Scripts according to the scale of fees set out on the Lazy Bee Scripts web site.)

3. If you purchase Complete Sets of Scripts for Performance, then you may:-
Make minor changes - see below - to the script to suit the needs of your group. (If you want to make major changes, then you need to ask us first.)
The authors of British pantomimes (and some other scripts) allow 'localisations' (usually topical references and changing place names to refer to local places) to be made without needing separate permission.

4. If you purchase Complete Sets of Scripts for Performance, then you may not:-
Make additional copies of the script. Additional copies can be purchased from Lazy Bee Scripts, either as Review Copies or as Master Scripts. (Master Scripts come with Copying Licences.)
Represent the work contained in the scripts as your own.

If you buy a script by mistake, or if we send you the wrong script, you have the right to refund and/or replacement provided you notify Lazy Bee Scripts within 14 days of your order being accepted by us.
If you wish to return a script and/or request a refund, please contact us before taking any other action. (For example, it is easier and cheaper for us to process a refund than if you cancel a transaction with your credit card company.) See our Contact page for contact details. Please quote your order number in any correspondence.

1. What we provide
Review copies are single copies of the script in booklet format, intended to let you decide whether or not the script is suitable for your group. Review copies do not contain music. (Where music is supplied by Lazy Bee Scripts, it is only available with the producer's copy of the script which is part of the Master Scripts or Performance Set.)

2. Use of the script
Review copies are provided for the purposes of review only. Possession of a review copy does not convey any rights to the public performance of the script, in whole or in part.
Copying and distribution of the script, in whole or in part, by any means constitutes a breach of copyright (actionable in a court of law) and is forbidden. (Photocopying and performance licences may be obtained from Lazy Bee Scripts according to the scale of fees set out on the Lazy Bee Scripts web site.)
You may quote from a review copy for academic or journalistic purposes, provided that you cite the source (script name, author and publisher) in your work.

3. Review Scripts are NOT Loan Copies
Lazy Bee Scripts does NOT provide a 'Loan Service'
A 'loan service' is provided by some publishers. Loan copies of their scripts are lent to customers a cost lower than buying. Lazy Bee Scripts does NOT do this. Loan copies let potential buyers read a script that they have not seen before. Lazy Bee Scripts does not need to do this, as potential buyers can read the complete script on line before they buy a copy. If you have bought a review copy of a script, you have paid for it, and you keep it.

4. Returns and Refunds

(Most browsers can display and print .pdf files, if yours can't, then a reader is available as a free download from the Adobe web site, www.adobe.com - search for free PDF reader.)
(Zip files saved to your computer function like folders. They can be accessed through the file navigation systems of Windows or Apple computers. This gives access to the content files.)

2. If you purchase Downloadable Merchandise from Lazy Bee Scripts, you may:-
Print as many copies as you need for the purposes of your organisation (theatre group, school, etc.) except where excluded by other clauses in these terms.

The Supplier shall be credited in the programme of any show in which the backing track is used.

6. Returns and Refunds
If you buy merchandise by mistake, or if we make the wrong merchandise available for download, you have the right to refund and/or replacement provided that you notify Lazy Bee Scripts within 7 days of your order being accepted by us. If you wish to request a refund or replacement, please contact us before taking any other action. (For example, it is easier and cheaper for us to process a refund than if you cancel a transaction with your credit card company.) See our Contact page for contact details. Please quote your order number in any correspondence.
Since downloads are provided as electronic copies, the concept of a return is meaningless.

1. What we provide
License to video an amateur performance of a script, in whole or in part. (Video is used here to mean any means of capturing and displaying motion pictures.)
For copyright purposes, a video of a script is treated in the same way as a performance of the script. The author is entitled to a royalty fee for each copy of the video produced.
License for an amateur production of a script includes permission to make one and only one video of the show.
Additional copies of the video are covered by these terms, and incur a video license fee.

2. Type of performance
These terms apply to videos of amateur performances. In this context, a performance is any use of the script, regardless of the presence or absence of an audience.
These terms only apply to shows licensed by Lazy Bee Scripts.
Videos of professional productions and videos of scripts made for other purposes are not covered by these terms. Please contact Lazy Bee Scripts before making a video of a script for any other purpose.
The right to make a copy of a video does not convey the right to broadcast the video, to distribute it via the internet to show it to a paying audience or to make sales directly or indirectly to the general public. If you wish to do such things, you must first contact Lazy Bee Scripts (who will set contractual conditions and who may refuse permission).

3. Credit Shall be Given to the Authors
The name(s) of the author(s) and the text 'By arrangement with Lazy Bee Scripts' must be displayed on the cover (if any) and label (if any) of the recording.
Where credit text is included as part of the video, it must include the name(s) of the author(s) and the text 'By arrangement with Lazy Bee Scripts'.

4. Refunds
Videos planned for a show which is cancelled before the video is made qualify for refunds of the video license fees. If you wish to request a refund, please contact us before taking any other action. (For example, it is easier and cheaper for us to process a refund than if you cancel a transaction with your credit card company.) See our Contact page for contact details. Please quote your order number in any correspondence.

1. What we provide
An on-line process whereby an author can submit a script for appraisal (in exchange for an appraisal fee).
Delivery of the script to a reviewer for appraisal. (Lazy Bee Scripts acts as an agency between the author and the reviewer.)
The outcome of the appraisal in the form of the reviewer's written critique of the script, covering points of style, content and suitability for the chosen market.
Where appropriate, we will also provide a copy of the script with errors highlighted by the reviewer.

2. Appraisal Timetable
We intend to review all scripts submitted within 14 calendar days of receipt of payment.
When the appraisal is complete, we send the author an e-mail explaining how to access the appraisal outcomes. The outcomes will be made available (only to the author) for download from the Lazy Bee Scripts web site.
In the event that we expect to be unable to complete a review according to the advised timetable, we will contact the author and agree an approach. (This may include a revision to the timetable or a refund.)

3. Appraisal Outcome
The appraisal outcome is the opinion of the reviewer. Since this is the opinion of a human being, it may be different from that of the author. However, we regard that as part of the benefit of the process - it tells the author how the script appears to a third party (even where that party completely misunderstood the author's intentions).
A positive appraisal is not a guarantee of publication by Lazy Bee Scripts or by anyone else.
The appraisal does not cover whether or not the script meets the submission guidelines of any publisher. It is the author's responsibility to study the submission guidelines before submitting work to a publisher.

4. Copyright
The submitted script remains the copyright of the author. The reviewer and Lazy Bee Scripts will not share the contents with any other party.
If, during the appraisal, the reviewer identifies any areas where the script may infringe the copyright or trademarks of other writers or organisations, this information will be included in the review. However, the reviewer and Lazy Bee Scripts do not accept any liability for failure to identify copyright or trademark infringement.
The review remains the copyright of the reviewer and may not be quoted publicly in whole or in part without the permission of the reviewer (via Lazy Bee Scripts), therefore if the author wishes to quote the review on a book cover or web site or in any other public place, then he or she must first contact Lazy Bee Scripts for permission.

5. Submission Format
The author is responsible for submitting the script in a format acceptable to the reviewer. Scripts submitted in other formats may be rejected without redress.
This service only accepts electronic submissions made via the form on the Lazy Bee Scripts web site. A list of acceptable file formats can be found on the script upload page.
The submitted script must be formatted for A4 or Letter paper with the pages in portrait format. The text must use a common legible font.
The submitted file must not have any password protection or locking mechanism which would prevent access or prevent the reviewer from highlighting errors in an electronic copy of the text.

6. Completeness of Script
Normally, we expect to receive complete scripts for review.
The reviewer will only consider the material that has been submitted for the current review.
An author may choose to send an incomplete script, in which case the review will be based on the material submitted. If a script is incomplete, the reviewer will be unable to come to conclusions about the quality of the plotting.
If an incomplete script is submitted, the author should make that clear at the start of the script file, otherwise the review will assume that the script is intended to be complete.

7. Word Count
The price quoted for reviewing will be on the basis of the word count specified by the author. The author is responsible for supplying an accurate word count.
The word count must cover every word contained in the submitted script, including, but not limited to, titles, character descriptions, speeches, stage directions and production notes.
The reviewer will check the word count and will delete all text beyond the word count specified by the author during the submission process prior to commencing the review.

8. Returns and Refunds
If the wrong script, or the wrong edition of a script is submitted, then the author should notify Lazy Bee Scripts by e-mail as soon as the error is detected. In the event that the review has not been carried out, Lazy Bee Scripts will, at its discretion, either accept a substitute script or issue a refund.
Disagreement with the content of a review is not regarded as grounds for refunding of the appraisal fee.
Failure to deliver the appraisal on time may be grounds for a refund, subject to discussion between the author, the reviewer and Lazy Bee Scripts.

The right to data deletion my be constrained by the needs of financial reporting and the need to maintain an ability to do supply performance rights to an organisation that has purchased scripts. If such a conflict arrises in response to your request, Lazy Bee Scripts will discuss it with you with the aim of coming to a mutually satisfactory solution.
