Kalifa's Amazing Adventures by Nikki Harmon

The lead character is a young elephant and various others are animals. These are supposed to be indicated by costumes props or masks, rather than being entirely realistic! All the ingredients of the classic whodunnit, including the pipe-smoking amateur detective - though in this case, she might well be one of the suspects!
