The Golden Touch - And Other Tales by Nicholas Richards

Health and Safety by Nicholas Richards
RolesMinimum Male roles = 1. Minimum Female roles = 0. Minimum total with doubling = 4. Minimum total without doubling = 4. No chorus. The characters - a schoolmaster and three boys - are written male, but need not be. They also need not be played by actors of appropriate age - it is, after all, a send-up.

SynopsisA cautious schoolmaster is keeping the Health and Safety bods happy by holding cricket practice with not bat, no ball and no netting. And all this practice is for the match next Saturday, where just to be extra safe, there'll be no opposing team...
It is, of course, Health and Safety gone mad.

Language Lessons by Nicholas Richards

There are two consistent characters throughout (plus an offstage voice). The rest are brought on for each 'lesson' so the 'Englishman' could be played by a different character in each scene (and need not be male).

Peter and The Violin Teacher by Nicholas Richards

The characters are both written male - one old, eccentric adult, and one young, precocious boy. Could be played with the ages as written, but could also be played by two children or two adults.

Pyramus and Thisbe by Nicholas Richards
RolesMinimum Male roles = 4. Minimum Female roles = 3. Minimum total with doubling = 8. Minimum total without doubling = 12. No chorus. Characters include a wall, a lioness, a statue and a mulberry tree. Aside from that, they are all normal. (Whilst there are three female characters - four if you count the lioness - they could, in Shakespearian fashion, be played by lads.)

StyleShort drama (played for comedy) in which the protagonists speak Latin and the narrators, where necessary, translate.
SynopsisThe story of Pyramus and Thisbe is most familiar to modern audiences through Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' - rehearsed during the play and performed by the Mechanicals at the end. The Latin tale - from which Shakespeare drew his story - is from Ovid's Metamorphoses.
The story is of two lovers separated by their parents and a wall. Arranging to meet, but dying in the process.

Sic Notus Ulixes? by Nicholas Richards

SynopsisThree scenes from the story of Ulysses' homecoming translated from the original Greek (*) and thoroughly mangled and distorted for dramatic presentation. Narrated by the original poet himself.
* Whilst the above summary notes the translation from Greek, it does not note what it is translated into. In this case, it's Latin (which itself is translated - or at least clarified - into English by the narrator).

A Tale of a Nail by Nicholas Richards
Performance by Central High School finished as runner-up in the Maine Principals Association drama competition 2014

Whilst Mr Gauche, for example, is given a gender, it isn't really key to the plot! Many of the characters, are, when all's said and done, anthropomorphic personifications of cells and micro-organisms.

StyleOne act play set in the imagination of a character fighting off an infection, where the protagonists - germs and blood cells - act-out their roles. Fantasy, but with a lot of educational value.
SynopsisWhen Mr Gauche accidentally hammers a nail through his thumb, he only wants medical help from the Doctor, but he gets a thorough lesson in the body's defence mechanisms anyway. A musical version is available here.
